Dr. John Shields
Hematologist/Oncologist

Dr. John A. Shields began practicing oncology and hematology in Reno in November 1979. He received his Bachelors in Arts degree in Mathematics from University of California, Berkeley and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado with Honors in Medicine. Dr. Shields completed his internship at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His postgraduate fellowship in Hematology was accomplished at the University of Utah College of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah. His residency in Medicine was completed at the University of California at Davis School of Medicine, Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinez, California, where he was Chief Resident. He was a Visiting Fellow in the Division of Radiation Therapy at Stanford School of Medicine and completed his fellowship in Medical Oncology at the University of California School of Medicine, Davis.

Dr. Shields is a Diplomate, National Board of Medical Examiners, Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine and Diplomate, Subspecialty Board of Medical Oncology. His memberships include the scientific societies of the American Society of Clincal Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.

Dr. Shields is licensed in both Nevada and California. His positions have included Chairman of Data Management Committee of the Nevada State Tumor Registry, National Cancer Institute Investigator, Clinical Investigator for the National Surgical Adjuvant Project for Breast and Bowel Cancers, Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine and Investigator for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group. In addition, he has co-published several articles in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the Proceedings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the publication, Cancer.

Dr. Shields is married and has two daughters and one son, and two granddaughters. He enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, swimming, scuba diving and gardening.
